79 yota rebuild
« on: Aug 12, 2011, 12:01:52 PM »
was hoping someone could help with a rebuild question.

looking at an aluminium radiator that fits 84 and newer 22r motors, was wondering what kind of modifications if any i would have to do to put this into a 79 20r?

just a little bit about my build.

had a guy that told me he had an old flat bed Toyota for sale and would be willing to let it go for $350... as would most of you i imagine, i jumped all over it. the truck fired right up i drove it down the road checked 4wd drive everything seemed to be working ok........i was a little to excited for my own good though got the truck home and started to disassemble the interior, he had carpet sample for floor mats which also doubled as a floor board if you know what i mean.. if you take them out you could flinstone. i got to really checking out the body and it was in horrible shape, 1 bolt held the entire cab to the frame it came off immediately and the search was on for a donor. checked every salvage yard in a 3 state area and struck out. some friends told me to call a place that wasn't in the phone book and what do you know i got lucky, this guy is seating on a Toyota gold mine, couple fj's and 3 full yota trucks now only 2. i ended up getting an sr5 full cab in absolutely perfect condition, cab, interior, frame, spotless 22r, trans, and transfer case... $400 and he dug it out and loaded it on my trailer.

now the work begins...

i pulled the cab off my doner truck with some help from some friends pulled the motor and tranny in one piece, which is now nestled in the corner of my garage waiting for a new home.
axles where completly stripped and the frame, well i found out why it was at a junkyard was snapped(dang it) i all i ended up keeping was the cab, motor, tranny and transfer case.
when i tell you the cab was perfect i mean that.
the front grill was completly intact still chrome and un broken along with headlight trim and headlights, fenders look to be brand new primed black along with the doors and hood. bucket seats all the gages solid floor with original carpet sliding back window and clean front glass.

as for the original truck it is in my garage stripped to the frame and i am currently working over the engine. so far i have replaced and or custom painted

crawler cam(261c)
valve cover
timing cover
water pump
oil pump
timing chain(double row w/ steel guides)

next step is the tranny and transfer case
my brother has a 5spd attached to a 22r which he has so kindly given me
the 5spd will replace the original 4spd
a dual transfer case is also in the works(i will need some help through that one)

i will post pics of the painted items asap
