84 22r rebuild

Well went out and bought a rebuildable 84 22r for my 81 sr5 4x4.
Need to know what mfg of pistons I should buy and what cam.
Would really like to stay away from LC engineering tooooo
expensive.Alos need calif. smog legal stuff. You guys got any ideas. Pistons will be .020 over and I will have the head done also. thanks

well I can't help too much. I got piston's from lc.  but I got a cam from NAPA. it passes smog. heck get the pistons from napa too. how bout a "eng kit?" from napa. if your not going to turn 7k most any pistons will work. my .02

I think Marlin mentioned something about a rebuild kit.  I know they are offering rebuilt engines

I was an automotive machinest for 8 years, and have rebuild many Toyota engines.
Lately, we have been soooo busy, I have not had very much time for engine work.....
1980 Toyota - 1997 3RZ-FE 2.7l Engine, Turbo R151F 4.31:1, Triple Turbo Marlin Crawler Billet (2.28x4.70x4.70) = 1,148:1 Crawl Ratio, Marlin Crawler Twin Stick and Short Throw Shift Kits, 30mm H/D Output Shaft, High Angle Drive Lines, 5.29:1, ARBs, High Pinion Front, 25mm HD Billet High Steer Kit, 6 Pin Locking Hub Bodies, 86+ Wide Rear End, V6 3rd member, Chromolly Axles all around, 37" IROKs with Beadlocks, York onboard air - Rollbar air tank, Premier Power Welder, Marlin Crawler 4" USA-made Leaf Springs, Bilstein Shocks, et cetera....

Engnbldr.com has a good reputation among the Toyota 4x4 discussion groups. I've gotten some good parts and good service from engnbldr. You can get a rebuild kit with 4 pistons ,pins, rings, oil pump, timing chain kit and gaskets for about $250. He's got good cams too.

Ok you guys ordered pistons and rings from summitt
But I still need to know can I put a double row timing chain in a 84 22R?  And does any one make a good cam for calif smog?

Not sure about the details on the Double roller, but TRD, makes a good cam. At least I think so, cuase I run one

lc got ya covered for the duel chain swap.  napa for the cam.

Engnbldr.com has a good cam. The double row chain eats a some horsepower. I can't remember how much though. Can any 22R afford to lose any power? :shake_head:  And when have you seen a single row chain fail on any 22R that was pushing less than 200hp.

By the way, what kind of pistons did you get from Summit and how much did you pay?

speed pro pistons and rings 18 bucks a piston and 40 for the ring set. Not bad huh.
