pilot bearing install
« on: Jan 09, 2003, 07:54:37 AM »
Any tricks of the trade for installing the pilot bearing?  I don't want to make a mistake and damage the bearing or the crank.

I just ordered my new Marlin HD clutch kit, can't wait to have it all installed.

Ok, I did it with a socket and it seems fine.

How about clutch and flywheel matchmarks???

Don't see one on the flywheel.  The pressure plate is clearly marked.

If you didn't mark it before removal I think your SOL. Try looking for clues on the mating surfaces of the flywheel and crank. Usually if there is no way to positively locate the flywheel position (dowel pin, offset bolt, etc.) it shouldn't matter.

Well the flywheel can go on the crank 6 different ways, 6 bolts.  There is no keyway or anything.

The flywheel is not my original unit.  There are some marks on the flywheel but there is no possible way for those marks to line up with the clutch.  The closest I can get it is 5 inches away.

Thats the way it was on my Chevy, there was no way to line up the marks, just impossible.

These motors externally balanced? right?

I went through that once and just put it on..never had a problem..I could not find a mark on the flywheel..some clutch packs don't even have a mark.sure not very good packs but I just put in what the customer wants..

Is that the right way to bolt on the flywheel though.  I mean, does that part matter at all.  Seems like it doesn't.  In relation to the crank I mean.  Do these flywheel have a zero balance?  So its same all around.

Thanks for the response.  Like you said not much I can do about it.  I will put it together and see how it goes.  Its just easier to do it right the first time right.

Ok maybe I didn't make it clear.

Its not the flywheel that came off the motor :thud:

I traded mine for this new unit plus $30.  The grinder was down and they had one already resurfaced in stock.

What do you do when you buy a new flywheel? :dunno:

The marks can't line up?

I really think you'll be OK. If the pressure plate only lines up one way, I'd put it on that way. AFAIK Toys aren't externally balanced, unless something has changed in the last few years. Also the flywheel would have some extra weight cast into the backside if it was externally balanced.

Thanks for the help.  You are probably right.  My chevy had the same deal.  But that's another story afterall its a Chevy and things don't line up as nice:)  I will button everything up and report back when its done.

There was a spot on the flywheel that looked like material was removed. It was a half hole (not drilled all the way).  Really small though, perhaps to zero it out.
