Elocker actuator weak?
« on: Feb 21, 2010, 11:42:27 AM »
I'm gettin ready to put a elocker in my 4runner. I checked the actuator and it was locked up. So I took it apart, the drive side of it and cleaned and greased everything real good. It moves now atleast. It's just when I put it in the housing (with no gears) and cycled it. You can hold the arm. It takes some force to hold it but you can. It goes in to lock position as soon as you let go. I'm probally lookin to far into this, but was wondering if anybody knew if or thought that may not be enough strength to engage. A new actuator is pretty salty!

I guess i dont know how much force they are really supposed to have, but once you drive the truck a few feet the splines line up and it really shouldnt take much to slide the collar into the locked position.

Yeah I figure it won't take much to engage. The motor(windigs and stuff) for it is the size of a window motor if not smaller.  I'm still lookin for a spare though. Because you know it'll work great till I really need it!

if that actuator was that strong it would strip those tiny little worm gears out and render it useless.
dont over think an extremely simple device

Im picking up a e locker today with blown bearings but have done a front axle mod to fit one and a bunch of research on them.  The main thing to watch out for on e lockers is protecting it from the rocks.  Getting a really strong cover for it is a must.  Also like what you have done,  Keep it lubed and sealed.   Now I just need a set of 5.29s and I am pretty much ready for the big rocks !!  :king:
