How much clearance?
« on: Jan 24, 2010, 12:07:17 PM »
On my 1987 4runner i picked up a set of 16 inch aluminum wheels and tires off a 09 Tacoma for next to nothing to use as a street set. The only issue with fitting them on the truck is the wheel weights catch on the tie rod ends, my question is what would be a safe clearance between the tie rod and the wheel? I'm thinking a 1/4 inch spacer should solve the issues but not entirely sure. I don't even have a stock set of wheels to compare.

I wouldn't use more than 1/8" spacer.

Might have to use stickon weights for the inside, and clipons on the outside.......

I wouldn't use those thin 1/8 or 1/4" spacers, they're too dangerous.  With the stock backspacing on them they'll look goofy unless you use a 1 1/4 or 1 1/2" adapter/spacer.

Scratch that, they actually don't look bad with that offset, must just be the increase in diameter that put the weight inline with the tie rod.

Thin spacers will do the trick.  If you have plenty of thread left on the studs once they are on I wouldn't worry about anything and just run it.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

The reason I said 1/8" is because that was a stock spacer width on a 86 camaro on the rear wheels.........

I figured that if 1/8" was OEM,   you'd be fine also.........

For some reason I was also thinking of tacomas super short front studs and not the runner.

thank you all, i ended up using the 1/4 inch spacers (mainly because i could not find 1/8 inch locally) and i will be going with tape weights in a couple days when i can get the truck into the shop.
