V6 Valve Clearance and timing
« on: Jan 25, 2011, 09:34:36 AM »
I'm new to the 3vze game and my 89 4runner has a fair amount of valve noise. I have read through the Haynes manual and surprisingly it tells me "...adjustment should be done by a dealer service department." The manual won't even tell my the clearances I need.

Can someone help me out? How to do adjust clearances on a 3vze and what they are suppose to be.  :help: :help:

Its a shim and bucket style. You can buy just the shims you need, after you figure out what you need or get a kit. Kits like 250 bucks. But with these engines, better to have noises then no noise. How many miles are on it? Mines got over 200k, last time they got check was at like 80k.
Dr.Maxwe001 – well i have a 15 gal compressor now and if I gett he 60  and then use the 15 as a reserve that wil give me 75 gal  thats close to 80 isnt it ?

Its has rebuild heads not to long ago, the engine has 160xxx. I just bought it not more than a week ago. The noise is annoying but I can deal with it. $250 for a kit is outrageous. This is one more reason to get rid of the 3.0.

The engine doesn't have as much pep as I had hoped. I think my 22re, header, manual has as much power. This in an auto and a runner though :dunno:

Difference really shows when towing.

This thing couldn't tow worth a dang :) I was thinking of towing my truck to KOH. That idea flew out the window as soon as I drove it for the first time. Only real difference I can feel is it doesn't slow down as fast when on hills  :gap:

The other concern of mine it the timing. It is suppose to be 10* and it's at 12 or so. I can't retard it any more because the distributor is turned as much as it can turn (maxed counterclockwise). Did someone not align the teeth on the distributor correctly?

You know to do the timing, you have to use a jumper wire in the dignostic port right.

Yup. I jumped it but there was no drop in idle like when I do it on my 22re.
