External coolant leak (intake manifold)
« on: Dec 12, 2009, 02:14:14 PM »
The bolt with the white arrow is leaking coolant. It only had a flat washer. I used some hi temp silicon and stop it but I dont trust it. The coolant was almost pouring out of it under pressure. It seem to me there should be no coolant against that bolt at all but I have never had a toyota manifold apart to see the water jackets. Seem like those bolts should all have a fiber or copper washer on them if the have to be sealing coolant. Anyone know about the bolts under the manifold??? Also whose spacer/ adapter is on the weber carb should I need a new carb  gasket??
thanks

ok,  you'll need to pull the intake off, the flip it upside down and remove the bottom plate,  or just see if you can tighten those small bolts, they are 10mm head dont over torque them

Most forums Ive been on like a fresh post when you change subject. The previous post was more to identify the manifold.
this one is to trouble shot the leak

Why would I take the manifold off?  I can reach them all easily. My question was "Seems like those bolts should all have a fiber or copper washer on them if the have to be sealing coolant." I have already snugged them down. I have never seen a flat washer that could hold back coolant under pressure. I can't believe any engineer would design somthing like this. The gasket is not leaking. The coolant is coming from around the bolt and flat washer

the  gasket that goes on there surrounds the bolt hole, obviously whoever installed that gasket last damaged that area or didnt put the proper gasket on

ive never had a leak there on any of my engines, in fact this is the first time ive ever heard of a leak there  :dunno:
