5MGE swap
« on: Feb 11, 2005, 08:10:01 AM »
If i dont get Skims 4runner then glen is gonna sell me a 5MGE for my 86 4runner. Just wondering what the specs were on the 5MGE engine... i bet it beats the 22re ;) anyways. I was just wondering what has to be done to swap in this 5MGE... new tranny or just a bellhouse customization or something? i know that i will have to get the 5mge engine mounts, but what other stuff has to be done in order for me to get this engine in the bay and running. Glen will hopefully come down here and get it running with me ;) unless i have to get the engine rebuilt or something then Glentopher can help me :gap: :_order: time!! Thanx for the info

Hi Guys,
I live way over in New Zealand , and we do a bit of wheeling in yota's too. Over here a pickup is called a Hilux but its all the same. Lots of 4runners from Japan here now too.
Anyways, the 5mge swap is very common here, it will pretty much bolt straight in to both solid and ifs models, left hand drive may be an issue tho...dunno, we drive on teh other side! :D
here is a link to a guy that has done about a dozen of these swaps

i was thinking the 5mge would bolt right up to a w56 tranny, so i dont think you will need to change bellhousings fireimp

Ah.  A favorite engine of mine.  Actually a copy of the design used in the old Zs, which was a copy of the I-6 Volvo used for a while in its military vehicles(and one passenger vehicle as well).   Which I believe was a copy of an old Chrysler Hemi engine, come to think of it.  Everyone copied from everyone else, pretty much, and as such, it was an absolute tank of an engine in all its forms.

I love small inline-6 engines.  Loads of torque and quick to rev.  Dirt simple to modify.  The only issue is the fuel Bosh fuel injection requires some attention and patience as it's needlessly complex and full of connection points and fittings that leak and/or don't seal 100% as they age.

Note - change the timing belt.  It's a known weak point on these engines, and simple to change during the swap.

Why not just go 7mge? More power.. Relatively cheap too.

I had a 5mge in my runner at  one time.  Get headers, cause heat traps in the rear of the head and are prone to gasket failure, This also applies to the 7mge.  I shimmed the oil pump, for greater pressure while crawling.

headers are not required on a 7M actually.... that is not a problem on those engines.
unless its used for track use.... headers are just a useless investment for the Daily driver or crawler.
as headers on a 7M just creates mroe heat in the engine bay.

Toyota did a great job on the design on them. I got a 7MGE Supra and have done my research :D

Mind sharing why Im incorrect?

I have called several exhaust companies as well researched why people dont run them in their supra's
so if heat is a problem in a supra that see's street/highway speeds.... i think a crawler would suffer more.

Now if someone isn't... then post up. cause as far as I know and a handful of exhaust companies know.... they do for DD's

A header is not necessary. Your crazy. 89 Supra all stock besides intake and muffler, 170000 miles runs strong, no issues.... Never runs hot? Or feels unusually hot.

the header produces more heat in the engine bay then the stock manifold/collector does is all i was stating.. .and unless you are racing... for the price and added HP/TQ is minimal... as the stock one is fairly well designed.
all the exhaust companies told me header wrap was the only solution along with ceramic coating to reduce engine bay temperatures.

Im going off the research ive gathered is all.

I have a header and heat is not a problem on my rig. That said I have a 2RZ-FE and not a 5M-GE or 7M-GE. I used to have a 3VZ and that engine got really hot.
