5 spd shifting problems
« on: Jul 24, 2009, 10:41:35 AM »
i have a 86 ex cab it has a 22r and its the forword shift case tranny. the problem is that it does not like to go from 1st to 2nd when i am moving and if i stop it takes a long time to get it to go back in to any gear. 3rd 4th and 5th seem to work just fine. could it be the shift fork? of maybe the shifter is worn?
thanks for any info

either your shift fork is worm or the shifter the only advice i can give is to tear into the tranny and check the components for wear

sounds like the syncros on 1st and 2nd.  if you know how to shift not using a clutch and not grinding your gears, try it between 1st and second and see what happens.  thats one way to check the syncros.

i have never taken a shift fork out, how hard is it to do yourself or should i get it done?

Chagning out the shift fork is prolly the easiest of any internal repair. But the syncro you have to really disassemble her.

Here are some pics of a W56B with the case off. The large fork near the center is the 1 and 2 fork/hub. It is upsidedown in the pic but it really shows it. The metal ring that bends around is the hub, is the shift fork. The two brass rings are the syncros.

Here is a pick of the W56B all disassembled

Here are some of the special tools needed that i had to make. You will still need snapring pliers, press, and an assortments of other tool to get her done.

I enjoy rebuilding things like this more so then sheet metal work. Marlin prolly could rebuild it for you also :-p Enjoy
