shock shaft knick
« on: Jan 09, 2009, 02:56:48 PM »
so a few weeks ago i was using an angle grinder on my axle housing, and as careful as i was being, the grinder jumped at one point and hit the shaft of one of my bilstein shocks. it put 2 little knicks in it :smack: :smack: :smack: :smack: :smack: :smack: :smack: :smack: :smack: :smack: :smack:
now a few weeks later, i looked at the shock and it seems that theres oil on the shaft. i can see dirt stuck on the oil on the shock shaft. none of the other shocks have oil on the shaft and there isnt oil getting on this one from anything.

did i ruin my shock?  :willynilly:

Well when I take mine off I wrap a hold down strap around the eyes and then take them off. They don't move from that and are already lined up with the mounts. Sorry it would have saved you if you had just asked how people here keep them from extending from the pressure.

I did notice that there are a few for sale in the parts section, don't know if they are what you are using but worth a look.

Well you did not help it out any. Is it leaking bad enough to where it is dripping or is it just weeping? If it is weeping not dripping I would just run it. I had a Rancho that got nicked on a rock and weeped. I ran it for a few more years until I replaced them with the BBCS shocks I have on there now.

its such a slight knick you can hardly feel it or see it. more like a scratch almost. theres oil residue on the shaft...no drips, just residue. and its got a crapload of dirt stuck in it but thats beside the point. i figure since the bilsteins are pressurized, every time the seals in the shock run over that knick, it lets out a tiny bit of oil.  of course i will run it until it doesnt do anything anymore. they were 100$ each after all :smack:

That knick is tearing up the seal little by little every time the seal runs over the knick. I'd run it until you see it dripping.

Polish the nick so that no metal is above the level of the shaft.

Even if he gets his shaft polished it will slowly ruin the rubber.

yeah its pretty much screwed. im gonna run it until it doesnt work and then run it even longer. i knew about holding the shock closed with a strap. i just didnt want to deal with taking it off for 2 minutes of grinding. oh well

True but the more the shaft is stroked the faster the fluid will come out.

Aw so it was only a little nip eh? The thing about leaving it on is as the fluid leaks out and it looses it pressure, (don't forget that Bilsteins are pressurized) there will be a gap in function until the fluid hits the valving. It could even cause some axle wrap.

i wonder if my front bilstein could have gotten damaged from catching air on hill climbs? you would think that wouldnt hurt it.

You can do what we do to our shock tubes in downhill mt bike racing when we nick them, sand the nick clean, then fill with nail clear polish to stop the fluid loss, and then sand smooth.
