help with warped housing
« on: Jan 11, 2009, 09:10:02 PM »
so i shaved my front housing and welded all my 3 link brackets on it the other day. i just started putting it back together and my driver side birf wont go in. i know its warped, bad. anyone ever rebent there housing back or know of a link of somone who has. i have way too much time and money in all the brackets and shaving to just start all over. its not gonna be on the road much anyway.

this is my thought

the red would be some tubing i would weld perpendicular with the axle. then attach a comalong to each tube and bend it back....with a little heat also

im gonna bet it bent because when u welded on the truss, u didnt do 1" stickes along it, so it is warped up, and u need it to come back down. it sounds like a dumb ideal, but id try to weld a piece of 3/16x1.5" strap with alot of heat to the bottom of the housing to try to warp it some back down.

Were you welding on an unmounted housing or was there weight on in?
either way, housing is fubar'd. Replace it.

you can probably get another empty housing pretty cheap.

http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=39620.0

I'm pretty sure they will have one.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE
AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.

I'm thinking it could have been the two-tone paint job that warped it  :talkingn:

I doubt u are gonna move much with them knuckle gussets and a truss on there

Doing that with the long inners and a ratchet strap may elongate the trunion bearing holes and completely ruin that housing even more.

heck with the work you've done I'd try and save it, i'd probably cut some of the welds on the truss then flex the housing and reweld the truss worth a shot

It can be straightened but you need to be able to see exactly what way its bent so you can get it back straight their are shops that can do it for you their was a really good write up on it on pirate it showed everything you need the guy chopped off the front of an old 3rd mounted some bearings in the carrier and used a long rod thru the axle too see where and how much it needed to be bent. i found one pic from a different thread general idea on straightening.

That is exactly how i fixed mine but I used a peice of railroad iron under the axle while it was on the truck...  It worked just fine.
