Warped Axle Housing?
« on: Sep 04, 2005, 07:30:18 PM »
I noticed this evening when I was standing in front of my Toyota Pickup with a 85 solid axle that the tires were leaning to the inside of the tires(inside of tires are wearing faster). My neighbor said that it looked like a warped axle housing. Also, I just put a new seal kit in the front axle and have just developed a small leak again on the driver side. I do have a truss that I haven't installed yet.
But is there a way to straighten out the axle housing??? Drives fine, no wondering, 35" tires...
Thanks,
CJ

Did you have any trouble putting the axles back in? Usually if the housing is bent the axles are difficult to reinstall. I used to stand in front of mine and think the same thing. But is seemed like everytime I looked at it, it was bent a different way. It was just an optical illusion.
Check your allignment. Jack up the front end, and while resting a pen on a jackstand slowly spin the tire and draw a line all the way around it. Do that to both tires, then measure from line to line in front then behind. You should be 1/8 to 1/4" toe in, in front. Your tire wear could be just allignment.
If it is bent, I have heard that some places can straighten them, but it may be cheaper to find a used housing somewhere and just swap your parts over.
