Looking for custom built snorkel for carb'd motors..HELP
« on: Nov 04, 2007, 07:47:40 PM »
hey guys..I know a lot of you run in the rocks..but im hoping some of you are mud guys.  I have an 86 yota with a carb'd buick 3.8L.  Rigth now its just a carb with a air filter sitting on top.  I do a lot of water crossings and mud..i need to raise that intake!  My cuestion is; HOW!? I need to run a tube off of the carb, have some sort of inline air filter and than a tube off of that to run as the snorkel.  What do you all suggest? Links, buildups and pictures would really be awsome.   :turtle:

some people get creative with some PVC pipe, and then mount a K&N or similar cone air filter on the end of the snorkel

depending upon the year...... I had an '82 and there was an acess panel on the drivers side. Used stock aircleaner assembly, reversed the rubber intake, PVC back to the panel which I cut a hole in, siliconed it and wala, intake drawing from the cowl instead of along side the headlight. total cost about $15

Also one thing to keep in mind with a carb'd motor. Just because you have a snorkle doesn't mean your engine is going to be water tight. That water may be diverted from your intake but it'll get in somewere else.

PVC Pipe, glue and imagination is all you need!

Maybe a hole saw if you plan on running it out of the fender like some do.

Ive actually decided on this...My truck has 7 inches of lift and 36s. I dont really want a visable snorkel.  Im going to run a cone filter inside of some sort of container.  That have a pipe coming out of the container to the rear corner of the engine bay.  This will raise the intake a bit..but the real concern was having the open element filter just sitting ontop of the carb. Here is what I have so far...tomorrow im gonig to figure out what kind of container to put the filter in..

A large paintcan would work perfect....just need to figure out what I can use to cut a perfcet 3 inch hole in it.  I dont ahve any metal hole saws
