Sheared-a-Bolt
« on: Oct 20, 2008, 02:06:55 AM »
Best way to get one out?
Water pump bolt that sheared at the block, I would like not to remove the water pump, so any thoughts? Will an Easy-out work? Do I need to drill in out and re-tap it to 8mm?

 :help:

If you're not leaking, leave it until it does............

I hate when that happens, and I'm in agreement. If it ain't leaking leave it. If it is PB Blaster and easyout it and you shouldn't have to retap it.

Really? I thought that would have been an important bolt because there's not much else there to hold the pump down. And the pump doesn't leak much, usually just drips slowly, but I drive a lot and would like the peace of mind that it won't come loose or leak.

Did it break off just the head, flush or recessed?

thats what I was wondering.... if its just the hear just pull the pump and get it with some vice grips.... otherwise just use an easy-out and should come rite out with some good ole PB

If it was a trail truck & you trailered it then I would leave it. But since you drive it a lot, pull it back apart & fix it right, then you have no worries  :twocents:

If the bolt is 30mm like I think then it sheared about flush with the block but I can't say for sure until I pull off the pump again. I have about 20mm of the bolt left.

I know the bolt is an 6mm but how long is it? Like 30mm?

actually it might be one of the few that does go all the way to the block, if so  its probably more like 40mm long

I thought that but I think I found that this one goes into the water inlet for the block, there's a mound on top of the tube on the outside of the block. I don't think I have a pic of it.

Looked at my old timing cover.....

There's only one bolt that goes thru the water pump and the timing cover........... your broken bolt isn't it.   (it's the 1 big bolt).

try a mechanics length 5/16 left hand drill bit, it should slide right in through the water pump keep it level, push real hard and go. remember you have to use reverse on the drill, once it bites it should spin right out.
be sure to look at the other piece you have because if it's not fairly flat then you wont be able to use this method, the angle will push the drill into the cover and then you will have a leak. Small block fords do the same thing and thats how I get them out, plus I get paid for pulling the timing cover. good luck

I didn't know they made left hand bits. That would have worked too. I was able to get an Easy-Out in there and the piece came out easy. Those water pump bolts are 6mm, they're way small, no wonder it sheared.
