What t-case for duals on my '81?
« on: Oct 18, 2008, 07:50:06 PM »
What t-case do I need for duals on my 1981 pickup.  I think my 5 speed is the L-52 with the belhousing cast into the trans body?? and the transfer case is definately top shift...  will any top shift 21 spline gear drive case from a 4 cyl truck work or do I need a specific one?

any top shift case will work. just make sure of 21 or 23 spline when you buy your adapter.

Isn't there a way that you can use a forward shift case?

yeah if you convert the shift rails over. You can either use top shift rails if you have them, or I've seen guys cut the front ears off of the forward shift rails and weld them inside where they need to be, and then cut the extra length off of the front of the rails.

long story short,  its  more trouble than its worth

if you have a forward shift tcase (G52 or G54, or w56c or D) then you need the crawl box to be forward shift too
