« on: Sep 29, 2008, 03:07:01 PM »
was at the con this weeked and broke a chromo 27 spline inner and i think that it also took out the detroit.  i have not taken anything apart other then pulled out the broken side, but wanted to know if this is common with detroits.  thanks

If they break when an axle breaks?  No, thats not common.  What makes you think the axle breaking took out the detroit?  You won't know until you pull it apart.

:dunno: I've seen lockrites blow up when you look at them, and a few detroits go, but it seems to me like they take the shock fairly well.  Either way, you won't know until you take it apart.

I have heard of this with the Detroit's, never had the pleasure but I've only broke one axle ever and it didn't take my locker with it.

This mean you didn't toss in the spare and wheel?

Where are your pictures?

Dave lost two detriots after a birf went pop.

Shouldn't have any issues with Poly.  Lol.

i just bought the kit from GotPropane.com, you should contact Cary, the owner, he is very helpful with any questions you might have.  As for power loss i did not notice much but maybe a little at highway speeds.  I am no mechanic though so i might not of had it tuned right.  For offroad driving i would highly suggest it

when i broke a stock front inner it took out my detriot.  there are these gear type things inside of them and it took all the teeth off both sides.  i tossed another shaft in it but sometimes neither tire would spin.  i'll never run a detriot again.

the only spot that the 30 spline long axle that is the same size anyplace is the splines in the diff,, they are beef..  I have never been able to think why the after market axles are so knecked down in diameter..  I had a set of 27 spline poly axle and they were tiny in diameter..  even smaller than stock..  Granted they were 4340 but still small

i noticed that too when i bought them, they held up real well for a good amount of time but i guess everything has its breaking point. time to start saving for the 30 splines

x2.  You were defiantly going to break something!

Detroit is almost never the item to break 1st.  Unfortunatly, it has a good chance of breaking when something else goes.. (as does any other locker... but there are less expensive paperweights out there.)

Are you hydroed?  If you weld up the front, you'll want to go hydro assist.  (it'll make for easier turning too when you're on your side!!  :D  )

ya, the detroit is really common to break when a shaft snaps. if your low on cash try and cant afford a new detroit, get a lockrite. i gave my toy front the beat down for 3 1/2 years breaking everything on that axle. the lockrite never had an issue. maybe it was just my luck?
