broken axle in detroit locker
« on: Dec 29, 2004, 07:57:19 PM »
I broke an axle at the splines in my 9 inch with a detroit. The gears miraculously survived without a scratch!!!The locker got wallowed out yet the splines are fine.Is the locker trashed or is it salvageable?
I'd rather push a Toyota than drive a Jeep!!!

Detroits do come apart with axles snappange,,not all the time,,but it does happen more often then you think..It states in the detroit website that this can happen with the detroit..Pullit and look it over or just toss an axle in it and find out..I don't know how common it is with a 9in in the rear,,I know it happens on toy fronts often when an axle goes..
Forgiveness is between them and god..
Its my job to arrange the meeting!

Can someone explain why the detroits come apart when axels snap?  Also, is this just when the axel snaps or when birfields break to?  I have a detroit in my truck and I blew two stock birfs before I put longfields in and everything seems to be all good but I haven't taken the 3rd member out to check it.  Should I pull it out to inspect??

this is my description.... may not be totally correct so take it for what its worth..........

the locking collars in a detroit are two meshed tooth gears. (same in arb btw) When there is mass torque applied the teeth are locked together exerting mass force. When there is breakage, axle, hub etc, the gears  recoil  back and attempt to release slamming into the teeth of the other gear shearing off a tooth or two.

I had a hub gear go, taking out the other hub gear and roudning the splines on my long. The shock of this broke off one tooth of the inner mechanism on the detroit. It was replaced and I am still using it.
