2nd gen runner build info
« on: Feb 10, 2009, 06:50:55 PM »
I am thinking about doing an sas on a 2nd gen 4 door 4 runner. I had a 93 with the v6 that was the family ride, and liked it other than the motor cause it was awful on gas. I've also owned an 84 4x4 and a 93 4x2 and loved the 22re. Are 2nd gens hard to find with a 22re, and if so is it difficult or stupid to do a swap in one? I currently own a 95 jeep yj with d44/8.8 soa locked, high steer,4.0l,35's,ect. which I dig but I need more room for the kids and don't want a cherokee(don't dig unibody)so a 4 runner makes sense?
.02 from those that know would be great.

Most of the 2nd gens that I see on craigslist have the V6 but I do see them sometimes with the 22re. If you want to swap the engine look at a 3rz instead of a 22re.

Is the 3rz the 16v? I had a 95 truck with that motor. Maybe i have the wrong impression of the v6? My 93 automatic 4runner got 13mpg consistently and was kinda wanting on power, but it was an auto and seemed way tall geared although it was stock. Also, I know that some years had problems with head gaskets, is that something that is able to be overcome? My plan is to run 5.29's and 35's, maybe that gearing would make for decent mileage? Like my current rig, it will be my daily driver.
Thanks for informing the ignorant :help:

A 3rz is a Duel cam 4 cylinder that came in 95+ tacomas, 4runners, and T100s. It makes about the same power as the 3.0 V6 but with better mpg. A w56 will bolt right up with the 3rz bellhousing which will make upgrading transfer cases cheaper. Big Mike on this board has swapped several of these motors and has an extensive build thread on the subject.

A 5vz is the quad cam 3.4 liter v6 that came in the same year trucks. If you get a truck with the 3.0 v6 the 3.4 is supposed to bolt right up to the motor mounts and 3.0 manual tranny. If you google search pirate 4x4 you will find several people who have done this swap.

The 3.4 makes exelent power but is probably more difficult and expensive to work on. It uses an R series tranny so it also requires an additional adapter if yo want to run duel cases.
