87 runner 22re rebuild help/info
« on: Jul 23, 2019, 07:04:42 PM »
Okay so I have a question for everyone. I have an 87 4Runner with the 22RE. I bought it from a friend about eight years ago and he rebuilt it but used very cheap parts. I am looking to rebuild the current motor or possibly upgrade to a different motor. I am running 33s and probably won't go any bigger. I would like some info on what I can do to get more power out of it for the highway and to pull my small boat. When I go up the canyon I'm pretty much wrapped out in 3rd gear just creeping up the canyon. I don't have a whole lot of money to spend on a rebuild or new motor but I would like to try and do something with it. I'm pretty new at all of this so I don't know where I should start. Any info will be helpful thank you.

The 22re, like any efi engine can suffer performance issue from a number of things, and you may not need a rebuild.
What leads you to believe the engine needs a rebuild?
How many miles on the rebuild?

The biggest performance upgrade you can make to the 22re, is a gear change, with 33's you should be running 4.88 gears, the 33's are 15% taller than the stock 28's, and the 4.88's are 16% lower than the stock 4.10's gearing.  If you were going to do a lot of towing wit

Hey 87ricerunner,

What is your elevation and average climate?

Can you post some photos of your Runner?

I am running 4.56 gears. That has helped a lot with freeway speeds but I still don't have enough power when it comes to climbing the Canyons. The motor was rebuilt about 80,000 miles ago. My elevation is about 4000 and I am in Salt Lake the summertime gets to be about 90-100 on average. I have all the stuff to do a solid axle swap. So I figured while I'm doing that I can do an engine rebuild. I've had to replace the head gasket twice now since it was rebuilt. I also go through a quart of oil about every three tanks of gas. I burn quite a bit but I'm also leaking from the rear main seal. I'm just looking at the most efficient way to get power from the 22RE.
