Synthetic oils for the drivetrain
« on: Jul 08, 2004, 02:52:57 PM »
Does anybody have any recommendations on synthetic oils for the drive train?
Should I go with the specialty oils like Amsoil / Royal purple or go with conventional brand synthetics like Castrol / Mobil. Is there any real difference out side of price?
My driving conditions are a lot of highway mileage and plans are in the works for weekend wheeling also.

Everytime I have used Synthetic in the drivetrain I have had leaks.  Thats with a couple different vehicles.  Seals all good.  Went back to dead dinos and the leak stopped.  Thats 2 front ends, 3 rear ends, 2 transfer cases, 2 transmissions.  I kept tryiing hoping it was a fluke.

In the Yota the about a couple of months after I put Redline MT90 in the T-case I noticed it started dripping and a puddle formed after it was parked a couple of days.  It never leaked before, I know this because no puddles or drips after 2 years of driving and 2 years before that the truck was parked in my driveway with a blown motor.

I have more stories if you want to hear them but ther are redundant.

From now on dead dinos work fine for me in drivetrain.  I only use synthetic in my motors and that's it.

Thats my experience anyway.

I have used Redline synthetics for years with no problems or leaks. If you have new gears of any sort run dino for the break in period then replace with synthetic.

I wish it wasn't the case just had bad experiences.  I like the idea of synthetics, they make sense.  You just get tired of wasting the stuff at $8 a quart as it leaks in the driveway.  I know lots of people seem to have good luck with them.  I still have 5 or 6 quarts of MT90 in the garage.  Maybe someday I'll give it another go. :crossed:

I'm new to Toyotas (rebuilding fj40 myself) but started using Amsoil about 2 months ago in my 1998 Land Rover Discovery,
which has 192,500 miles, and my gas mileage went up by 30 miles to a tank!  I have some leaks but I had those before the Amsoil.

I have been using Royal Purple in all my trucks for a while, 1977 scout daily driver, 1978 scout that is built for trail use, and now my 85 Yota with good luck..it isn't cheap, but when I did some temp work in the production facility a few years ago, they sold me on the products..been running it ever since then with good luck.
- What about LUCAS?
