From CaliforniaJeeper.com

Recommended equipment: Full size and long wheel base vehicles are not recommended.  A lifted, locked short wheel base vehicle with skid plates, rocker guards, and tow hooks and straps are a must. It is highly recommended that someone in your group have a winch. The less the vehicle is equipped the more work and damage you can expect. Bring extra gas and spare parts. Remember help for your vehicle and medical attention are hours or even days away.

Runner size wise will be fine ( I have run it with a couple buddies with fullsized Chevys) but I think your rig might be a bit underbuilt. @ the trail head of Dusy, there is a sign that states something like " 32"tires or larger with at least 1 locking differential, some of the most built vehicles have still broken on this trail." Swamp I would say is about the same.

Really just depends on how much winching and body damage you want.
In a stock runner you will get a lot of body damage.

I have an 85 4runner .I have run Swamp twice, w/ Open Diff's Front & rear, and Dusy 3 times  only to Thompson Lake & back to Voyager Rock. Open front Diff & A Lincoln in the rear. At the time I had 33's w/ about 3"of susp lift & a 3" body lift. Always w/ a winch which I have used.  Oh and I had a 4.7
Swamp was no problem. Thompson Hill is Hell !!!!

I would never do any of these trails w/o a crawler whether it is a 4.7 or a dual case.

I did Swamp with my 4Runner in a couple hours, was told it was at least a day trip if not 2. Couldn't figure out what they were talking about. It was myself and one of my club members with a Sammi, we did get lost going back so maybe that's what they were referring to. The only obstacle that had any issues for me was climbing that steep granite slab, it drops down quickly then almost straight up. My front wheels were constantly trying to get behind my rears, kept sliding sideways on me but I did have lockers f/r and an auto trans, but we still didn't see what all the fuss was about.

Your subject line scared me, thought there were some requirements put in place by the forest service, my club will be based out of Dinky Creek the end of July, beginning of August to run those trails.

Dusy is an awesome trail. I think Turbo ran it with bald 32's, lockrite front and welded rear with a single 4.7 case and had no problems tackling the trail including Thompson hill. He is of course an excellent driver and locked up.  He did get quite a bit of body damage though!

I've ran dusy with  33's and a open front end. It was not easy and i don't recommend it. Plan on 2 day's the trail is app 33 miles long starting at courtwright and dropping you off around Kaiser pass. CJ  :turtle:

I missed doing the Dusy by one week!  But Coyote Lake was fun!  Especially, for a initiation to rock crawling.  It's the one trail that I want to do when I get my rig built, outside of the Rubicon.

 :gap:  :gap: :gap:

I wouldnt reccomend it in a no lift IFS rig with 31" a/t's, rear locker and a single 4.0 case, Although it can be done. And for the record I took out one fender (not paying attention) and one front bumper corner peice. Oh, and I bent a stock rear leaf spring... thats still on the truck today.

Not really.  Too hard to pull off when the trail is 33mi long.  China Gear tried to do it and at least on of the partisipants got in trouble for going off the trail.  Haven't done it since AFAIK

We ran Dusy with open diffs and 33s with no problems.  We thought the trail was too easy and haven't gone back.  IMO the Rubicon is much better and harder.

You got lucky.  If you're going to do the Dusy strictly for the chalenge please stay away and leave the scenery for the rest of us.

Too easy? if thats what you really think you wont find many trails in this world that meet your challenge requirements.

I've heard that the dusy is one of the hardest trails around. I went up to the trail head and walked it before i thought about trying it and figured that i would get way too much damage to do it; of course i had been driving for like a month. Do you think I could make it in an '82 longbed with a 4" lift and 33's unlocked without damage. Body damage doesn't count i don't care about it. Thats why i got an older toyota.
If you have to go "balls deep" you aren't doing it righ

Just try it with another rig, You'll figure out what you and your rig will do. If a group comes behind you just try to get out of the way.
