Help! Funny Smell Coming From Oil/ Timing Chain Noise
« on: Oct 15, 2009, 02:42:47 PM »
1981 Toyota (Approx 7k on rebuilt 22r).

Hey guys i have been having a rattle coming from my engine.  I have tried everything i can think of.  Last night i did another oil change and readjusted the valves, (.007 in .011 ex) and it still hasn't fixed the issue. Im thinking its the timing chain.  I was wondering how much play/slack should be on the chain on either side.  the drivers side of the chain had no tension on it at all and the pass side of the chain had a very little play in it. Im trying to figure out if i need a new chain or not.

My second problem i got last night was after changing my oil, filter, spark plugs, and air cleaner (also adjusting valves and retorquing my head), i began to get a funny smell coming from my oil when my truck started running.  It smelled like rotten eggs/sulfur.  Now i am completely stumped on this one.  i have no idea what would cause this and dont know where to even start looking.

Any help on either topic would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks guys.

 It smelled like rotten eggs/sulfur.
Usually that's the smell you get when the cat converter take a  :pokinit:  but that comes out the tail pipe.

What parts did you use for the rebuild?    My first timing chain replacment I made the mistake of using junk timing chain guides and they broke after about 10k miles.   I went to the metal ones after that and never had a problems since.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE
AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.

you need a new chain KIT, tensioner, chain, and guides

drop the oilpan and pull the valve cover

K i had a feeling i needed a new chain.  It should be tight on both sides right?  I bought it rebuild by Rising Sun Engines from Chico, CA.  I heard the metal guides eat your chain up more so you should get plastic ones.  Opinions anyone?

I know the cat comes from the exhaust, idk why its coming from my oil.  im stumped.  :hammerhead: :willynilly: :headscratch: :dunno:

I just put new timing components and a new head on my 854runner and used Rock components.  When I removed my old parts I noticed that the driverside plastic guide was basically non existent but that was the first one I've expeirenced that broke.  Rock components are plastic as well and from what I have heard Rock parts are really good. :twocents:

    • Please ban me!
          OK!
      I am banned!
I just got a kit with a metal guide that had plastic on the chain side. Best of both worlds I hope.
Precision guess work done here.
