Seat cleaning 101
« on: Dec 12, 2007, 08:01:43 AM »
I posted this in my build thread but figured others might be interested with dirty nasty seats in your rig.

These are my seats in the toy after 200k miles and who knows if they have ever been cleaned. Instead of replacing or covering up with a seat cover I stripped them down and tossed them in the washer.

here is a comparision of how nasty they were. gross huh? pass side is reassembled after cleaning

no before shot but here is an after they have been through the washer twice. not 100% clean but alot better than before

crank the washer up on super dupper cycle, dump in a ton soap and let it do its thing. might not want to let your wife or girl know what your doing tho!

I will get a picture of the driver side after 3 load cycles and a scrub brush. It was dirtier than the pass side andI got it to come out alot cleaner. I will also take some pictures of the tools you need to reassemble. just need a set of hog ring pliers and a bag of hog rings.

Rag soaked in gasoline and a scrub brush. Wipe down with rag and then scrub hard with brush, just don't soak the seat. Smell will go away in a day or two.

Forgot to mention remove the seats from the truck and take them outside, don't do this in your garage next to the water heater.

Wont gasoline eat away at your seat foam under the cover?

gas does not seem like a good idea to me. Ive used brake clean in the past but its hard on the fabric.  These are some of the easiest seats Ive take apart so its so simple its stupid not too. you will never get all the dirt and grim off by just spot cleaning.

nope I have not wheeled the truck yet so no shitting myself yet. I can not vouch for the previous life of the seats tho. Ive only owned it for a few months and only drove it for about 3weeks before ripping it apart to make a wheeler.

hey what can I say Im anal about my vehicles even if its going to live in the dirt

Fabric in the washer works great.  The obvious problem is reattaching the fabric again.

i got some grey sr5 seats from my buddy who was throwing them away because the whole center section was completely black, i busted out my ice chest, and poured a bunch of oxy clean and soap and really warm water, then scrubbed the crap out of them with a med soft plastic brush that i got from autozone for cleaning grease off your hands. then i pressure washed the soap off after about 15 minutes, and when i was done except for a couple ciggarette burns they looked brand new!! i let them sit in the sun for a couple days to dry, and when my buddy saw them again he got sick....... they looked better than the honda seats he just bought to replace them!!!!!!

We're not soaking the seats in it, just wetting a rag and wiping.

Just make sure to clean out the washer after. I had washed my filthy shop clothes in the washer and the ring it left gave me away to the GF, I got an earfull.

Oh yeah Simple green works great too of you don't have oxy-clean. And HOT water.
