Engine Buildup! 22RE + 22R combo

As promised...
NEW Thread for my engine.

I pulled my engine yesterday and its sitting on a pallet. as is the 22R i purchased tuesday for $150.
it didnt burn, smoke and leak any oil..... til it blew the head gasket due to the guy not checking the water level.
it was running fine before hand.

The head looks kinda crudy.... clean it up and check it.

my engine is still pretty much intact.

I have the block and its internals, oil pan, pickup, head and its compontents, timing componants,  lower intake manifold, fuel filter, and clutch assemly.

so i will start combining parts.

my block from my truck is done.
so ill be using the 87 22R block, 90 head, 87 oil pan, new timing kit[ chain, gears, guides, full gasket set, tensionor ] the piston rings, and :pokinit: are fine in the 87 block, new thermostat, new fuel filter, new gasket set, tune up.

ill take pictures before and as im reinstalling it.

so far i havent hit any bumps.

my head gasket will be here tomorrow.
my head and block surfaces arent warped.... perfect!
ill have the valves adjusted.


MY first question though....
Should i assemble as MUCH as i can out of the truck?

go electric fan?
so i dont have to fiddle with the clutch driven one.
if so... which size?

where to get this lil bugger for the cheapest!

pick a part...is what I am gonna do....had a buddy do it to his newer dodge truck.  Got the solinoid form radio shack cheap...he also made it into a two stage fan......looked just like from the factory
85 flatbed, 22RE,Downey air, redtop, dual 2.28 crawler, high steer, Marlin clutch, 5.29's, ARB rear, lockright front, Warn hubs, wrangler 4" front-skyjacker 4" r-springs w/6" shackels, flip kit, 35x12.5x15 MTR's, sliders, belly, exocage.

Wouldn't you wanna shave your head and block just to make sure they arn't warped, or a bend, something you can't see with the naked eye????

i had my mach. check it with micrometers, feeler guages and what not.

So more update.
i just got inside after pulling my oil pan off the 90 motor and metal parts and shaving galour!
VERY BAD!

good thing i got the other block and stuff.
i got most of it disassembled off the 90 and some on the 87.

my HG comes tomorrow and ill start on cleaning one of my heads and mating my oil pan to the bottom.

I am inspecting the heads now.
i have a full timing chain kit... x the timing chain cover and water pump out.... as im using the ones i have.... i have ones that are 2 years old..... off the 90.

my cam in the 90 is fine.
using it.
my valves are fine at first inspection.

looks like the head on th 90 is ok.
Next is to inspect the 87.
it needs some cleaning.

so i just pulled my head off the 90 motor. and yes.... a blown headgasket, blown piston rod bearings. and a messed 4th cyl. that engine was destined to blow up i sware.

my 90 head looks the best of my two.
its guckned with carbon though... not horribly bad though..
whats the best to clean it... without washing out my valve guides and stuff.

what you mean washing the valve guides  :dunno:

you  need  to pulle the valves  out and clean them  and inspect them,  and install new valve seals

what you REALLY  need to do  is  get a small bore  rifle  barrel  brush  remove the cam,  with the cam out  and the caps off you will see the oil holes  in the bottom,  THOSE MUST BE CLEANED OF ALL JUNK

if  sludge gets in a head thats where its going to be

also  on the engine block, on the passenger side  you will see the castings  for the main oil galley, its that ridge  the  oil filter  is  mounted to

i always run a shotgun brush thru those,  theres a allen head plug  on each end of the block  and  under the block  inside the oilpan gasket 

unless your having it bored   then the machine shop  "should'' boil the block removing all said junk

if  you have LOTS  of  gunk/sludge,  then  you need to  look at your crank shaft,  it has allen head plugs  all over it,  remove them  and  brush the holes clean,  i always use  LOTS of brake clean  or carb cleaner

just make sure  you  get them back in REALLY tight

If your rebuilding your engine it's the right time to clean and inspect your guides and valve stems. the only time I'd worry about washing is on a very worn out engine i didn't plan on rebuilding that the seals were shot in... then on some worn engines the carbon in the guides and old seals well help keep it from burning a ton of oil. rebuild = clean and inspect...replace worn parts as necessary.

as far as guides  are concerned  if it  "washes"  away, it wasnt supposed to be there

 do the above when it comes to cleaning.. on my block i flushed all the passages and then had it cleaned at the machine shop again. brought it home and  thought that everything was cool. put the crank shaft in then thought just for fun I'd check the main oil passage, so i removed the plugs.. GADD!!! just full of dirt and gunk!! make sure you pull and check them things. from what i saw the only way to clean them is by hand. most people use the rife brush method. i used paper towel and wd40 with a wood dowel to push it through. then compressed to finish it up.. just make sure you remove all the paper towel. use a good light and check it twice..  carb cleaner followed by wd40 to keep it from rusting has worked for me.

so my dad and i noticed earlier this week... that there is a broken head bolt in the head.
we tried the easy-out method.
damn thing wouldnt budge and snapped the easyout.

so yeah thats where i am.

head is off. and its in the block... broke clean even with the block surface..
i have to cal lthe engine shop and ask how much they will charge to extract it....
i dont want to drill it out and make the blot hole bigger.. then i have problem and have to make it bigger in the head too.
