Unable to engage 4wd, lifter stuck in 2H
« on: Apr 24, 2004, 08:30:04 AM »
Bonjour,
My original FJ-40 tcase shifter is stuck in 2H. I am unable to move it. I was thinking it was freeeeeezed by now it's spring time and still stuck.
Do you have any indication where I shall look?

The shift linkage gets dirty and grimy over time and eventually the linkage gets stuck.  Use a wire brush and some degreaser to clean all of the shifter parts and it should take care of it.  Oh yea dont forget to re-lube all the pivot points when your done.  Good luck!

I have seem many rusted 2wd-4wd shift shafts stuck in 2wd. Do you have direct linkage or vacume shift?
Begin by checking for rusted, frozen parts.

As soon as the temperature give me a break (about 30F & windy when sunny and 40F wet when raining), I will disassemble the mechanical linkages (no vacuum) and check for rust.

If it's only rusted, I will be really happy. I have the tcase exploded schema (not the exploded tcase schema) and I would check the ball-spring also. I am not convinced that's a rust problem since the linkage work easily the day before but the ball-spring ...

Thanks guys, I will comeback with solution.
