Square tube Drivelines ?
« on: Jul 03, 2007, 02:58:26 PM »
Gonna install Dualcases at the end of July. I Will have to modify my drivelines and I have been  hearing alot of talk about squaretube. Is this a wise investment ? Are they really that much stronger than thick wall  tubing ? I'm just getting into this so I'm not ready to hit the Rubicon but when I get a few more runs under my belt who knows  :yesnod: Anyway would this be worth investment ?

I think people go this route more for the fact that it's inexpensive, and depending on how you build it, pretty tough as well. So cheap and strong is what you get, along with being set up just the way you want.  :dunno:  :twocents:

Cheap and strong, what can be better than that?

If you get the correct size square tubing you don't need to do all that grinding.

Use 2" ID reciever tubing for the outside and make both tubes the same length.

but yea like most have said.. just a cheap and strong alternative.

I'd pony up the $$ for a think walled round driveshaft for the rear, and then a square tube for the front.  If you do it right, vibes are reduced (I had my truck running 60mph in the snow in 4hi with no vibes as long as I stayed on it, and kept the driveshaft under load)  You will get some noise from the tube, simply because there is a little slop between the tubes, so it'll click, but thats no big deal :twocents:

I've beat my square front up pretty bad.  It's rock solid.  I know I would have dented and twisted a round shaft (maybe not a .25 wall  :headscratch: ) in a hearbeat.

Run a round rear and square front.

as for the noise just weld some small beads on the outside corners of the 2" o.d. tube. just make them small then build them up till it fits snug. oh and i put a zirt fitting in mine, the greese helps to. it'll still vibrate, just cuts down the noise

you can also wrap a few turns of duct tape around the inner tube :disturbed:  that really helped with the clanking, and its cheap and easy
