Down side to F./R Square Drivelines?
« on: Jul 01, 2006, 10:44:36 AM »
Anyone ever ran square drivelines front and rear?

Obviously this is for offroad use only.. you wouldn't get over 20 mph before it rattled your brain but since my truck is trailered everywhere and more then likely wont see over 10 mph I figured it would be a cheap alterative.

My only concern is the slop in a square driveline as appose to a round splined driveline which has virtually no slop at all..

If I run F/R  square drivelines is this going to tear up my seals on the input/output shaft alot quicker?

You will prob be fine...from my "research" it seems that if you are pretty careful about cutting everything nice and square and lining it all up right, you can run up to 35-40 with a square shaft before the vibrations kick in.
IFS is best kept at ambient temperature in a pile of scrap in the backyard.  When kept under a functioning vehicle, it tends to greatly diminish said vehicle's offroad ability.     -reklund5

From what i've been reading you need a dial indicator. Needs to be no more then 5-7 degree's off.. anything more then that and its going to start screwing things up.

I'm probably going to lengthen my rear CV driveline and integrate the 14 bolt end on it.

The front's going to be tricky because I dont have much space between the upper link and where the driveline will be, especially when its flexed out.

Shambone when I shortened my stock rear DL for my spare, I scribed long lines opposite each other on the tube then cut the needed section out, clamped together with angle iron to get the two tubes alligned and rewelded. I know you need to add a piece, but this will keep everything in phase as close as your gonna get with out rebalancing it. Also make sure not to cut out any sections that have the balance weights, (for those that shorten) and the closer you can make the cuts to the 3rd end the better (IMO) to keep the week spot away from center, and less leverage on the newly welded joint especially if you like to use your drivelines to park on rocks with  :talkingn:
