Diesel Engine?
« on: Jun 22, 2009, 08:09:14 PM »
Hey I was just curious cause my cousin was talkin about it. But is there like a diesel engine the will fit in a 1989 V6 4Runner? Or do you know where to find one? I was just curious about it and thought I would look into it just cause. I probly wont change it unless its a lot better.

The general TDI "swap" is to stuck a VW motor in it...

The bad is, well, the Toyota Gods will not be happy.  Nor will your pocket for repairs.  The good is that old wrecked VWs with TDIs are everywhere and dirt cheap.

What would be the oldest vw to source the diesel from?

The TDI's popped up in vw's in the late 90's. but they came with diesels and TD way earlier than that. TD's were introduced in the 80's but pretty rare. The TDI would be the way to go. Newer and more tuning capabilities

Lots of good info there, probably the only reason I know the first thing about toy diesels  ;)

If you do the swap I would recommend getting a half-cut. That way you have all the accessory parts to install with the engine. I swapped a 2lt into a 1987 toyota this way and it went pretty smoothly.

Probably helps that those trucks came with those engines, so parts availability is about the best for any toy diesel swap.
