the lighter one came off an '89 4WD, the dirty one off an '85. do they fit the profile? are these interchangeable? tia

Im gonna go with the top one being a w-56. From a efi truck. The bottom one is confusing it looks to be a top shift case but the pic is pretty small, so it makes it tough. Im gonna say its a g-58 with a chain drive case. How many bolts are holding the rear output cover on? That is the key. If it is held on by 7 bolts it is a gear transfer, if 5 it is chain. Also how many bolts hold the bellhousing to the trans? Hope this helps ya out.

Much better pics! They are both W-56's with geared transfers. The clean one is just forward shift. yes they are both interchangable just have different shifter locations.

so i can just swap in the "clean one" without any problems? what is forward shift? is there any difference between these two as far as reliability?

Forward shift means that the transfer shifter is "forward" of the transfercase not dirrectly on top of the lowrange box. They are the same trans you whouldnt have any prob's swapping them except maybe the shifters may need to be bent a little for clearance. Instead of cutting another hole for the transfercase shifter you could just swap transfercases and use the plate that is on the 89 transfer to cover up the hole where the shifter origionally was.

I just looked at the pic of the 89 tranny again you cant move the plate it has a differant bolt pattern. But you could very easily make a plate to cover up the hole and use some rtv to seal it back up.

I was checiing out the pics. The clean tranny is a G-series. The rib pattern on the main case is different.

I just checked the pics again that is a w-56. (I havent had any beer tonight LOL) Yes irregardless it will work in the 85 without any issues.

the dirty one is a W seires tranny
the clean one is a G seires tranny

They are interchangeable however
the W is much sronger and more reliable than the G due to the larger and wider bearings

the shifter holes will have to be redrilled (your floor will probly look like gears came flying threw it)

you could take the top shifting (dirty) case and bolt it to the clean one so you wont have to redrill the hole for the t-case shifter. but there is nothing to do for the trans shifter... you have to redrill it.

look at the pic of the cleen one... there is a black cast iron center section about 1 1/2" thick and on this trany there are 9 bolts holding the two housings to the center section

on the dirty one.... the center section is aluminum and there is 8 bolts holding the two housings to the center section

is the dirty one bad? why are you wanting to do the swap?
it would be more practical to replace a G with a W... that wold be an upgrade... but replaceing a W with a G is only benificial to have a truck that runs... say if you got a G for free and your W blew up you could limp your truck along with a G untill you could replace it with a W

i do not recomend replaceing a good W with a good G, your down gradeing.

it could be an 89, depends on the month it was made. if it's a jan 89 it would look and have the same parts as an 88.
So if something Toyota is off buy a year, it's no big deal if it's off by two years.... the other guy dont know what he's talking about

i'm not sure the month Toyota makes all there changes in but i can find out from the man himself if ya want
