Painting tube bumpers
« on: Jan 13, 2007, 10:04:09 PM »
Just curious what is a tried and true method. When I did my sliders I took me time, prepped them, primed, and all that jazz and was never happy with how they came out. I ended up having them sandblasted and powdercoated. I have my Marlin rear bumper sitting in the garage and I'm ready to paint it. I'm gonna sandblast it before I even start this time and go from there. Anyone have any tips for a lasting paint job?

Ya no kidding..hahaha. I powerdercoated my sliders back when my rig was a DD and didn't see anything too hardcore. I'm regretting now because I wont' be able to spray over the granite grooves. Read some stuff about people using that POR-15 stuff but that crap is hella expensive.

I used some self-etching primer and rustoleum flat black on my MC sliders and it worked out good.  Pretty durable and easy to touch up.

I'm waiting for paint to dry now. I sandblasted it this morning and just got done with the primer. Went with the Rustoleum Clean metal primer and Semi Gloss Black

i usually use acetone on the bare melta after sand blasting to make sure  there is a clean surface to attach too. but sandblasting is the way to go.

So both acetone and BrakeKleen give you a good clean surface that the primer will adhere to?  No problems with fisheye?  I have both, I just got my bumper, so this is good info.

Whatever you use to clean it needs to be A: very evaporative, lots of todays cleaners don't evaporate well, and B: applied with a clean, lint and oil free rag.  I know this sounds kinda straightforward and simple, but I'm always surprised by how many people grab a dirty rag and use the wrong chemical to remove oils.  I've had great luck with wax/oil remover stuff I get at the paint supply shop.

I can now vouch for the acetone, it was a great cleaner for my bumper.  Worked great.  Removed the shipping stickers and their stickiness, and the paint pen paint that was on it.  Didn't have any fish eye when I painted it.

X2 on the hammer paint.  I actually started using the Appliance paint at Homo Depot.  Pretty hard finish for spray paint.
