81 t-case front flange..
« on: Feb 12, 2007, 09:54:35 AM »
Need some help. I have an 81 toy PU. I am putting a front drive shaft from an 85 to 87 on it but what can i do about the front flange on the t-case? I know I am going to have to redrill the flange on the diff.  is the flange on the front of the t-case interchangeable with  any of the flange's i have on the diffs? Any help would be greatly appreciated....

The diff flanges wont work on the t-case, but any gear drive t-case flange will work.
If your building your own I recommend a rear driveline in front just shorten it and put a rear t-case output flange on the front.  It can run at more of an angle than the factory cv joint.  If not go with the 84-85 which have more travel in the cv than the 86-95.

if i was you  i would just rebuild the cv  on the 81 shaft,  a knuckle rebuild kit  is only about $30  at Napa,  and  if you can change a u joint you can rebuild it yourself

I did this with my truck, I took the flange off of a newer truck (I think an 88) and just put it on my 81 t-case.  That way both of the flanges on my drive shaft have the newer larger bolt pattern that match the newer H/P front 3rd.  I beleive I used a newer front drive shaft too with the larger bolt pattern.
