Getting tired of timing chains.
« on: Sep 27, 2006, 02:48:42 PM »
I have read posts til I'm about to puke! I thought I might have a timing chain issue due to the clatter coming from the motor, so I pulled the valve cover to inspect and to my suprise both plastic guides were in good shape.  Now what i did notice is the side without the tensioner flops around quite a bit duplicating the noise I hear when running.  So do the guides have to be trashed for the chain to be too loose?  Ever seen one stretch/fail with the guides still in tact? With 210k on it either it has been done by the PO or it needs it.  Your  :twocents: please.  Thanks.

I had my drivers side guide loosen up, turns out the bolts were loose.  If they are metal backed guides they may be ok.  If they are plastic replace them with metal guides.  Either way it sounds like you should replace it all anyway so that you know it's new, instead of guessing if someone changed it before.

Thanks guys, just trying to figure out if it is bad I adjusted the valves while the valve cover was off and the clatter is virtually gone.  The tensioner is still putting pressure on the chain but it just seems like there is way too much play on the other side.  Otherwise its real clean & shiney in there and I can tell the PO had the timing cover off, he left his trademark blue silicone in there.

How are the bolts that mount the drvers side guide...my guides were alright, but when my tensioner gave up the ghost the chain started wearing away the bolt head.
IFS is best kept at ambient temperature in a pile of scrap in the backyard.  When kept under a functioning vehicle, it tends to greatly diminish said vehicle's offroad ability.     -reklund5

Drivers side bolts look great,  I asdjusted the valves up a bit too tight and the motor ran like crap but was silent.  So today I adjusted them again properly and my noise is back, rockers I believe.  How noisy should the valvetrain be?

So I guess it's ok to have some tapping, it's pretty loud though I am tempted to re adjust the valves on the snug side to see if it quiets down a bit. Again thanks for the help.
