clicking noise
« on: May 10, 2006, 09:34:13 PM »
when I drive slowly in my 98 dodge ram it starts making this weird clicking noise that sounds like it's coming from the driver rear side of the axle. I have no idea what it could be  :dunno: it could be coming from anywhere in the back though. Only happens when I drive slow though. The axle is a chrysler 9.25 if that helps anyone.  It almost sounds like when you have a milk jug full of water and tip it completely upside down and let it glug out.

The only thing that comes to mind is the brakes. Maybe a pad is loose and moving in the bracket. Try to hold the brakes lightly and see if it stops making the noise. If you have drums, then pull them and look for any parts that may haven fallen off into the drum.

You also may want to get on a Dodge forum and ask the same question.

Do you have rear disc brakes? If so then I'd be thinking the same thing WM is, loose brake pad. I've never heard of a drum shifting back and forth since all those springs hold everything tight. Now if a spring broke then they can move around but would make noise all the time.

The rear is drum. I will have to check but I believe the noise does stop if I touch the brakes lightly. I will check next time it makes the noise and get back to you.  I tried posting in the dodge section on pirate but it wouldnt let me post threads.

thanks man. how much was that to replace? Should I just take it to a diff shop or driveline place because i'm not too keen with differentials.

The center carrier bearing is on your drive shaft. It cost me about 100.00 from the dealer.
you can do it your self it will safe you money, but if you can't take it to driveline shop.
But i would double check to make sure it's bad...

Yeah i'm yanking the driveline tomorrow because some guys on another forum told me theirs started doing the same thing and it was the rear U-joint, I think i'm going to put a new U-joint in anyways. What should I look for in the carrier bearing to make sure it's bad enough to have to replace?
