Elite 20r/22r Engine Builds, Show-off Post.
« on: Apr 30, 2006, 11:59:10 AM »
Think you've got a badass build?  Have you built a torque monster, or dumped crap loads to a finely tuned 22r, 20r, or hybrid?  Is your project engine on the verge of completion?  Post up here!!!  Toss up some pix, give us the specs, show it off!  This should be a great thread...cheers

my specs:

1982 22R bottom end, bored 1mm oversized
1979 20R head, completely rebuilt with 1mm oversized stainless valves and bronze guides, ported near valve seats, engnbldr 268C cam
offenhauser "C" series intake, weber 32/36 carb
thorley tri-y header

this setup absolutely tears it up on the highway.  when you get on the freeway, it's basically "stomp and steer", and oh yeah, shift gears every now and then too   doesn't ping or knock, runs great on the cheapo stuff.

the story behind it is one of pain and suffering though.  back in late 2004 i finally started work on my '79 to make it more road and off-road worthy, as it had seen about 25 years of neglect by then, and it was my daily driver.  i started off by buying an engine out of an '82 celica, and a 5 speed L series tranny to replace the 4 speed.  went to do a little maintenance on the new engine and found the rings were shot :rivers:  ah well, i only paid $175 for it, carb to pan.  tore it down, the journals were PRISTINE!  ended up needing a 1mm overbore and standard sized bearings.  a lot of nickel and dime parts later and a couple weekends and nights after work, and i had a 22R in my truck!  but the problems soon started.  the carb was basically shot, needed a rebuild.  i was quoted $200 from a shop, ended up coming to $300! :smack:

after the carb fiasco was solved, it basically ran alright for a few months until one day, i started getting a really strange rattle(like a timing chain), and my tach would go nuts.  pulled the valve cover and found i had broke the pin on my camshaft!  ended up tearing down the top end(i didn't want to screw up the gasket) and putting in a new cam and a cheap gasket.  well, 2 months after that, it blew that cheesy gasket!  turned out the head(that i never touched during the rebuild) was warped, so i had it resurfaced and put it back together with a toyota gasket.  next thing i knew, i had another strange noise -- it turned out to be a broken valve guide!  i had enough, and i pulled the 20R head off my old faithful 20R, and had it built.

i spent probably 3-4k total that year on engine junk -- had i not screwed around with that junk head causing all those problems, i probably would have been able to build a kickass engine for under $2k easily.  the head build only cost around $200 in parts, and about $250 for all the labor.

right now it drives pretty well, but the carb linkage needs to be redone completely(going to use a cable and arm from a 22RE), the exhaust is temporary(cherry bomb welded to the header pipe with a turndown, too damn loud), and the carb needs to be tuned.  the next investment i make is gonna be an A/F meter so i can dial in the carb mix just perfect.  runs pretty good, but it sucks gas like a big block, and i know there should be no way it only gets 14mpg even when i baby it.

Ahem...pimp :disturbed:
IFS is best kept at ambient temperature in a pile of scrap in the backyard.  When kept under a functioning vehicle, it tends to greatly diminish said vehicle's offroad ability.     -reklund5

yeah but thats where pirate4x4 comes in

pirate4x4, once the premier tech site, has become the home for rightwing whitetrash rednecks with chips on thier shoulders.
(but the important thing is that I'm not bitter about it) ;)

how about a 22rte  built with junkyard and hardware parts for cheap?
http://www.dana60.com/sundowner/intercool3.JPG

stock bottom end built from scratch using EB parts
cometic turbo headgasket
ARP head and rod studs
t3 turbo pirated from an xr4ti
intercooler and blow-off valve stolen from a supra
piping bought at home depot in the plubing aisle
3" exhaust piping ordered from summit racing
all adapters and misc. hardware found on McMaster.com

Pretty nifty I'd say.  How many miles do you have logged on that setup?  Bet she's a blast to drive on the freeway.

Pretty nifty I'd say.  How many miles do you have logged on that setup?  Bet she's a blast to drive on the freeway.

with 4.88 gears, 32" tires, and the boost set at 7 lbs, which is my detonation threshold, the 4runner will out-accelerate, out-climb, and drink less gas than my 2002 Tacoma 4x4 TRD Xcab with the 3.4L and 5 speed, which weighs about 500lbs LESS than the 4runner. this was my original design goal from the beginning.

now I'm feeling more ambitious,  I'm going to megasquirt the truck, maybe upgrenade the turbo to a GT28RS (disco potato) and crank the boost to about 12 psi. I hope to equal the performance of my wife's Audi A3, which is hands down the finest turbocharged vehicle I have ever driven (and I've driven quite a few)

I hear megasquirt is an "inexpensive", user-friendly, and powerful tuning tool.  A lot of guys use that on their 7M's.  Choice word, "upgrenade", I like that, haha.     Best of luck with your setup and keep us updated.
