I put in my order for a rebuilt 22re from Yota1, it should be ready in about two weeks, I ended up going with a stock cam profile, primarily because I need this thing to smog, I did how ever opt for a stage 1 build. basiclly just a little more fit and finish.  right now I'm working on getting the rest of the truck cleaned up and ready for the new long block.
Dropped the tranny yesterday, nay one have any tips on  a safe way to clean the 30+ years of grease and grim off the transmission?.

3 or 4 cans of brake parts cleaner ought to do it. A pressure washer would help too just keep it away from the shifters since they aren't sealed super well.

The best - cleans every good - and way cheaper to buy - that I have used, and I've tried just about every type of garage cleaner - is Paint thinner.

I used several steel bristle brushes.  Spraying the paint thinner on the tranny with a solvent spray bottle and let it set and soak for about an hour really lessens the scrubbing.

I would not use a pressure washer because I would not want to get any water inside the tranny or t-case.  :smack:

Gasoline is no-no for me... Just don't like the smell and the fumes, and its a little too flammable.... but it does dissolve the hell out of grease. :gap:

Old toothbrushes would not be strong enough!!

Paint thinner, like gasoline, is toxic and you don't want to breath it too much.  I wear Nitrile gloves!!

Im thinking of going with a steam cleaner, Im scraping off all the major stuff, then I'll rent one from Home Depot.

On another note am I correct in that I can pull the third members out of a 2nd gen V6 with 4.56 gears and replace my 3rds without any modifications? It will all mate up right?

So wheel bearings? I have been tearing apart the front axles/hubs and I am  wondering, how do I know whether to repack the bearings or replace them? Do I replace the bearing and inner race or the the whole thing? Toyo or Timken bearings, what grease to use, are the NAPA inner seals any good? SO many questions, The old FSM just says inspect and repack or replace everything more or less. NOT terribly specific and rather dated.

im sure someone will correct me if im wrong.

if the bearings look/feel bad replace them. if possible replace the whole bearing if any part is bad. toyo is toyota spec so its better, timken is good to. im a fan of napa and their seals are no different

They look/feel fine, although I don't have any experience with wheel bearings I guess I'll re pack them  with new seals and see what happens.
