Timing Cover Bolts ?
« on: Mar 15, 2006, 09:45:35 AM »
Ok... We have a pair of '85 SR5 4x4's  Both have 22RE engines.
We bought the FSM for that specific year... However the engines are from later year trucks...
The problem began with the top end rebuild... when Tim went to torque the Timing cover Bolt infront of the chain... it said torque to 9ft-lbs and that it should be an 8mm bolt... well it's a 12mm bolt as are a few of the cover bolts!
What should the 12mm Chain cover bolt be torqued to?
What about the Timing Cover?

We thought it was a PO quicky fix ... but he pulled the cover off another engine we have and it's also 12mm bolts where the manuals BOTH show 8mm and 10mm!

HELP!!

.... zippity doo dah... zippity eh?

There is a reference guide in the back of the fsm for nut and bolt torque.  Just measure the bolt (ie. M4, M5) and take note of the markings on the markings on the head.  From here, cross reference to the guide and it should let you know the torque..

hope this helps.. :crossed:

oh my dear sweet wtzmom,  they are referring to the bolt diameter, not the size of the head  of the bolt,   8mm bolts have a 12mm head

10mm bolts have a 14mm head

Tim has always "Mad Maxxed' it when fixing stuff... it says blah blah blah torque to 9ft lbs he just did it!
This was the first time he actually tried to 'dot every i and cross every T .. and it spun him pretty good for the priveledge!

Blah!
