pulled my head today....
« on: Aug 05, 2003, 10:26:56 PM »
I pulled my head on my 85 22re to install a brand new head. Just for background there was nothing wrong with the head that was on there but the gasket had started to leek and i also have a 4runner that needs a head so i figured i would get a brand new head and performance cam to install on my truck while i was in there doing the gasket then take the old head(which is still good with low miles) and install in on the runner. Well to get to the point i pulled the head and found all the cylinders have a gritty texture. Its like a black, rough sandpaper all on the top of the piston. if you rub on it it starts to come off and is like a bunch of metal chips... Is this bad? what is going on? What should i do? Also before i pulled the head there always seemed to be a kinda oily in the #4 cylider, what do you think caused this? Help please! I need to get the other head on tommorow More background.. All cylinders had 175 pounds of compression give or take 5-6 lbs...

Any help is appretiated and thatk you in advance

rest in peace Effay

sounds like carbon build up wich is common with todays crappy fuels and hard use of small engines..Its normal..If you bring each piston up to the top it can be cleaned off pretty easy with a scotch brite. The carbon is what can cause a engine to diesel when the idle is too high. The carbon will glow red and act as a ignition to left over fuel cause the diesel effect..Its not really too common on toyotas I have found but still worth cleaning off..Your compression sound like its good so throw your head on and call it good...

number 4 a little oily,             its probably the valve seal.
check to make sure they are seated on the valve guide,  and if they are check for wear of the guides on that cyl :driving:
