Chevy D44 axle shaft question
« on: Nov 10, 2005, 07:22:04 PM »
Buddy of mine has a D44 off a Chevy (the red 4runner in my avatar)  we went to a local pick n pull last week and got a replacement stubby passanger side inner axle complete with u-joints and outer axle.

For some reason he cant get the axle in now
says for some reason that it wont go in far enough like it doesnt line up with the locker

did chevy make different splined axles for different years?

we are gonna check the spline count tomorrow and see if he is just being an idiot

any advice would be appriciated

thx

it runs a different pressure angle (44 runs a 30  while 10bolt has a 45* ) so it "could" fit i believe but it wouldnt fit correctly (just slide in like a real 44 shaft).  im betting they got a 10bolt shaft  since it wont go into the locker.

i'm pretty positive we pulled the axle from a D44 and not a 10 bolt.

He's probably just not working the axle in until it meshs.

Thanks for the heads up.

okay, counted the splines today and took a visual first hand.

The outter shafts are the exact same but the inner shafts are way different.

I count 30 spline on his original inner axle shafts and these one's he got from the junk yard are 28 spline.

Anyone know what axles came on a 75 Chevy pickup?   I believe that's what we pulled these mystery shafts from.

Only thing i've ever seen with that kind of spline count was a D35 correct?

I'll try and post up pictures tomorrow, they're way different.. and the mystery axle is about 3/4" longer then the D44 axle

Just to let you now the outer shafts are the same on a d44 and 10bolt but the inners are different. My buddy and I tried to use a 10bolt inner shaft for his D44 before. We even cut the inner shaft in half and welded the D44 splines the the 10bolt shaft but of couse it didn't last long befor the weld snaped.
