22r redline
« on: Jul 30, 2005, 11:27:03 PM »
What is the factory redline on a 22r?  My toy only has an aftermarket tach and I really don't know.  Mine runs great to about 4500 rpm and then doesn't pull much more.  I would expect the factory redline to be at least 5000.

The R series isnt much for top end.  Its a good torque engine though.  With a few mods you can get it to spin higher but it'll just wipe out the engine in a short while.  My 94 has a rev limiter at 6200....  Dont ask me how I know or how oftern Im bouncing off of it. :gap:
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

yep, the factory redline is about 5500 on the tach, though it's max rated power is at 4800.  mine pulls hard to well over 6000, but i've got a 20R head.  i expect it to improve when i put my weber back on with an offy manifold(22R carb runs too lean and i can't adjust it) and install my header.

If you are looking for an actual rev-limit, a fresh stock 20/22R should float its valves around 6500 rpm, and I've seen some higher mileaged engines float around 5700-6200 rpm, but I wouldnt recommend doing that with a worn out engine :lipsrsealed:

My friend shifts his 22R powered Celica at 7000rpm without valve float, using some aftermarket valve springs and lighter s.s. valves, but I don't have any specs on his engine

Sounds like my "gut" or "seat-of-the-pants" is telling me the right thing.

My dad had a hard time shifting my 2000 SS Camaro because it bounced off the rev limiter at about 6,000 rpm and it was still pulling strong.  He was used to the old cars that let everyone know when they needed to shift.  The late model camaro felt like there was no end in sight.  According to the dyno runs that I saw it pooped out about 6,500 rpm, but I bet the valvetrain was good for 7 plus.
