Brake steer
« on: Jun 23, 2005, 04:21:04 PM »
Iv had this problem for a while now. On my 88 SAS with hysteer when i brake, not all the time but most the time the steering will pull to the left. I was thinking it was just because i had big heavy tires that caused it but its got to be more than that. Its not consistent. Sometimes it pulls to the right also. If im going down the street and i brake it pulls to the left i let off the brakes and over steer to the right then brake again it will still pull it back to the left. Kinda confusing but hopefully you will understand what im saying. If i was to let go of the steerign wheel it will just about completly turn the wheel by its self while braking.

My drag link is pretty flat and my caster angle is also pretty good. I have fj vented rotors and the ifs calipers on an 84 toy axle. I can post pictures of everything if it will help. I am running wagoneer 7leaf springs and i dont have spring clamps on them so the leafs are flared out pretty bad, not sure if that could cause it to move around.

Thanks
Nathan

If a leaf pack is twisting out it is essencially softer spring rate which will cause brake steer.  Go grab a big hammer and get them back inline and report back about the brake steer.

Iv done that before but cant remember if it still did it. Afer a few days they are flared out again. I want some of those clamps that are extended and let the springs do their thing

Just get some 1/2x3/16" steel and bend some up and put small 1/2" beads on either side of them to keep them in place?  Yes the springs are tempered but that small of a bead wont generate enough heat to really hurt the temper. ;)

Good idea, ill do that ;)

Does that sound like my problem here? That makes sense because that would be why sometimes it goes right and sometimes it goes left and sometimes it doesnt do it at all.

Are you're brakes workin properly?  No siezed calipers or kinked brake lines.  Mine used to pull to the right, turns out my caliper was seized.

make sure that your caster is set properly...I think a few degrees negative caster. otherwise can be very dangerous out on the street :scared:
