RedLine MT90
« on: Sep 06, 2021, 11:48:12 AM »
Have some extra RedLine MT90 and was going to put it in my transfer case and both diffs(2012 Tacoma).
Anyone have any new thoughts good or bad thoughts on the product?

I had a scary grinding noise today engaging 4WD.  Sounded like a chainsaw.  I want to drain the oil and check for metal, then refill it.

I wouldn’t waste it as it’s value is in the transmission. Just get some blend for the rest. It’s affordable and should perform just fine.

It's already bought prior to this situation of the grinding noise . The trans fluid I just changed.  For future knowledge would it be wise to put MT90 in an automatic transmission.

I'm used to manuals.

Back to the noise...I came home it would not repeat itself 2WD, 4WH or 4WLo.  forward or reverse.  My guess is 4W wasn't fully engaged, but why?  F'N electronic actuators?
I will still drain the transfer case to check for metal.  The other fluids are due for it anyway.

I would not put MT-90 in an auto trans or differentials. it's made for the type of manuals that call for gl4 but is fine at least for the gear driven transfer case. don't know about the chain drive. redline makes specific fluids for both the auto trans and diffs. I don't think MT-90 has any use in an auto 2012 Tacoma. If your Tacoma has a Limited slip rear you will want to add an LSD modifier or use a fluid made for lsd.

my recommendation
auto trans= Valvoline maxlife ATF
diffs/transfer case=redline 75w90gl5 or any high quality 75w90 fluid (add limited slip modifier for rear LSD)

The Toyota manual says GL4 works i will double check that...Well crap, the store is an hour away but don't want to drive my truck without looking for metal in my fluids after that scary sound I heard.

Auto trans already done.  My truck is TRD locker not LSD.  I put MT90 in my 2000 TRD locker rear diff without problems but I'm always open to suggestions and can always learn.  Better here than with my truck.

I read the bottle of MT90 just now.  It says NOT for rear wheel drive vehicles in rear diff.  No mention of transfer case.  Specific it said was designed for manual transmissions.  Redline says GL5 in rear diff.

I need to read the manual again.  I hesitate to call Toyota I never how smart the person I'm speaking to is, or if they even care.

I called Redline.  They said I can use their MT90 75W-90 GL-4 in my transfer case.  My Toyota manual says GL-4 or GL-5.

Anyone else have thoughts?  I want  swap my oil today.  Thank you.

If the manual says GL-4 then you should be good. Is this a Toyota manual or a Chiltons, Haynes, etc?

The stock Toyota manual.  MT90 only in the transfer case.  I need to drain this thing and check for metal shavings ...I'm scared.  I won't drive until I do it.

I'm doing it!  I can't have my truck sitting around if there is another flood.  Hopefully no metal in the oil.  Thanks everyone.  Best forum.
