I have a 95 4Runner with a 22RE in it. The big reason why I bought it was that it had a 22RE in it. I though all 22RE's had gear driven transfer case's, I was wrong. After I bought it I drove by YotaMasters in Corona, CA and talked to Eric. He told me that I have a G58 with a chain driven transfer case. Eric said I should acquire a W56 transmission that has a gear driven transfer case and then I could do the low range gears in the TC. Since my G58 is forward shifting he said the W56 I acquire should be forward shifting and the shifters should come up on the same spot through the floor. I acquired a W56-D transmission and transfer case from a 1992 Toyota truck.
I was hoping this would be a direct bolt in replacement but after taking a few measurements I have my doubts. Both transmissions are the same length at 25.5" but the transfer cases are different lengths between the chain driven and gear driven units. Has anyone ever done this swap? If so did the factory crossmember work with both units and bolt up in the stock location? Any other adivce?
