95 4Runner 22re - G58 to W56 Swap
« on: Sep 27, 2020, 04:54:28 PM »
I have a 95 4Runner with a 22RE in it. The big reason why I bought it was that it had a 22RE in it. I though all 22RE's had gear driven transfer case's, I was wrong. After I bought it I drove by YotaMasters in Corona, CA and talked to Eric. He told me that I have a G58 with a chain driven transfer case. Eric said I should acquire a W56 transmission that has a gear driven transfer case and then I could do the low range gears in the TC. Since my G58 is forward shifting he said the W56 I acquire should be forward shifting and the shifters should come up on the same spot through the floor. I acquired a W56-D transmission and transfer case from a 1992 Toyota truck.

I was hoping this would be a direct bolt in replacement but after taking a few measurements I have my doubts. Both transmissions are the same length at 25.5" but the transfer cases are different lengths between the chain driven and gear driven units.  Has anyone ever done this swap? If so did the factory crossmember work with both units and bolt up in the stock location? Any other adivce?

I am not sure if you have completed this swap yet, but everything will line up and bolt in just fine. The cross-members are in the same location, but you will need to get the correct mount for the gear drive case. I hope this helps!

Thanks for the reply. I have not started the swap yet. I did get a new mount for the W56. My biggest concern was the crossmember as I do not think my G58 crossmember will work with the W56. I called and spoke to Bud at Budbuilt and he said his crossmember will work so I am going to order one of his in a couple weeks. Fingers crossed.

No problem. I am just going off of a coworker's experience when he did this exact swap, and that is what he said about the cross-member, that the factory cross-member will work just fine. But going with Budbuilt's cross-member isn't a bad idea.
