New marlin clutch
« on: Jan 12, 2015, 08:46:08 AM »
I just installed a new marlin crawler clutch in my 97 tacoma 4x4.  When I resurfaced the flywheel I did the recommended .026 instead of toyota's .020 on the step. I expected a heavier pedal feel and a very close engagement to the floor Especially after reading on the website that this would be likely until it breaks in.  It is very light and silky smooth. I am not complaining at all, it feels great, I am just unsure if it should be like that.  Perhaps, my old clutch was engaging so high and required more pressure that this seems light. It honestly feels like the clutch in my old ford escort. I am afraid if it becomes lighter as it breaks in that it could be close to too light. However, after just a short test drive I love this clutch. I just wanted to check for some opinions as I am not an experienced mechanic, this is only my second clutch, and it was a real beast to do, especially compared to the last clutch I did on my 2x4.  It is my daily driver, but I am excited to see how it will do out on the trail the next time I go wheelin'. Thanks for the input.

As long as you torqued the pressure plate properly you'll be fine..  is there any slippage?

No slippage. I torqued the pressure plate in steps to the torque specified in the Haynes manual. That is one thing I am confidant that I did correctly!  Maybe it's perfect, I just don't have much confidence in my ability working on stuff...

Thanks for the confidence. I like how this clutch feels, I've heard they hold up well, I don't want to do that job again anytime soon!
