I couldn't tell you the brands, but more than once I have been around people having winch issues and there's a reason they all said something like, "I should have got the Warn."  Other brands can perform great but there's a reason Warn is the industry standard.

Winches are like auto makers now a days. If you know what you're doing you can even make a harbor freight winch almost as good as a warn. I know people who are running harbor freight and have been for a few years now and all they had to do was tear it apart and put some better grease in and put silicone on certain areas to keep water out. Now I personally was going to go with a HB winch but got a killer deal on an 8274, bumper and lights.

I run a s*ittybilt x20 8000k winch. synthetic line, covered from the sun, until needed. moved the control box into engine bay, and replace cables with tinned marine cables. no problems yet

My first winch was a Warn 8274 that I practically stole from a used car lot that didn't know what they had. I loved that winch but never got to properly use it before the truck was stollen. On my 4Runner I had a clapped out M8000 that my father-in-law gave me after he broke it doing tree work. I patched it back together and built the custom bumper that is currently on my truck for it. I used it to tug our fully loaded F-350 search and rescue forward command vehicle out of the snow with it once. It also failed me on the rubicon when the motor housing cracked. I bought a replacement motor and put some synthetic line on it. I recently found a good deal on another 8274 and will be modifying the bumper to receive it. I also just bought a WARN 4000 ATV winch with synthetic line for the Turtcel. I have been wondering about the WARN Powerplant. I might use it in a future build. I never hear of people using it. I think it is just hard to fit to bumpers.
