LETS TALK TOOLS!!! Used and/or "Vintage"
« on: Mar 22, 2006, 06:44:41 AM »
There is this pawn shop round the corner from work, I went there yesterday.  It is just a plathora of used tools...
For example, they have an older Porter n Cable portable bandsaw.  There is no plastic on this thing anywhere...case and blade guards are all metal.  Cheaper than a new Milwaukee too.  They have piles, and by piles I mean PILES, of drills from 30 to just a couple years old, most in the 25-50 dollar range...
So here is the issue:

1.  When it comes to used tools, what brands are the "quality" tools that last a lifetime and culd be a good   deal from a place like this?  What are the best of the best to look for?

2.  If I find something worth buying, like maybe that portaband, what are proper methods for cleaning it up and relubricating?  What is the best type of grease to use on these things?

3.  Anybody need a new-to-them drill? :disturbed:

Milwaukee portaband saws are good, that is what we used to buy before Makita came out with their new portaband, just be carefull when you set them down, the guard edge by the opening has a bad habbit of breaking off. It's about $75.00 and 45 minutes labor to replace the rear casing.

Any milwaukee drill or saw is a good buy though in my opinion.

For grease use any white lithium based grease and pack the hell out of it.

If you get me the model number and type I can get you a parts/wiring diagram with part numbers.

What other brands should I keep an eye out for...I saw some Hiltis, is PnC good?
Who else?
Thank you!

Hilti's are good if you can afford them, the parts for repair are a ripoff.
Don't get Porter Cable.

Top brands IMO:
Makita
Milwaukee
Greenlee
Burndy
Dewalt (for home use only, they use plastic gears)
Hilti
CEP
Thomas & Betts
Condux (pricey)

Porter Cable was a company that was failing and absorbed by DeWalt (along with many other companies).
Their product longevity is very short, and the quality of their parts is crap.

What about older models, I was under the impresion they made a quality tool at one time?
Oh, and thanks Simp, I appreciate all the advice!   :yesnod:

Keep an eye out for broken corners where the arrows are, on both sides, that is their weak spot, especially on the side you can't see in the pic.

What are like my top 3 or 4 for a 1/2 inch drill...
Can I do beeter buying a used bosch or miwaukee than going and buying a new one in the same price range?
I like those older ones with full metal cases and such...seem so much beeter built. :headscratch:

Go with Milwaukee for any electric drill.
Go with Milwaukee for any portaband saw.
Go with Makita for any battery tool (12V or higher only)
Go with Makita for any Dry-Cut metal saw.

I can't agree more I have bought tons of tools at pawn shops.  I bought my first plasma cutter at a pawn shop.  400 dollars out the door one 300 dollar set of leads and I had a 2500.00 plasma I used for about 10 years till I replaced it last year.  I gave the old one to my father n law and he still uses it today in his street rod shop.

Just sheck them out well before you buy them.  I think used tools are monet well spent

I have used a hand drill before, they suck, but are kind of cool at the same time since they are so basic.
