dimensions of a radio
« on: Oct 04, 2013, 02:19:03 PM »
So I am in the process of building a 4runner and I want to make an over head console in the cab. I will put the switches for my on board air, rock lights and such up there and I want to put a CB and a HAM radio up there.  So the question is how wide to I make the console so that the radios will fit.  I can make little brakets to hold it in and space it but if the whole thing is too narrow it won't work.  How wide are your radios?

I think they would vary by manufacture? I dont think the sizing is as well established as car radios.

It will depend on the CB you decide to go with.  The simple 40 Channel $40 Cobra's/Uniden's are about the same size, but the rest are different sizes.  While the dimensions alone would work for whatever size CB you decide to go with, you should have it on hand when you build the console, so you can test fit it, and decide how best to build the console so you can install/remove the CB when needed.

I kind of figured this was going to be the case.  I would probably need to decide which radios to use and then go from there.  The radios are just a little pricey for the nice ones so I can't get one now just to measure it.  It sounds like I need to do some more reasurch on radios and go from there.

I did make a cardboard mock up of what I am thinking of building but I have to resize it to post, so I will try and do that soon.

Ive always been happy with my Cobra. No need to mount a box (that needs to be visible at least) and works perfectly fine on the trails or highway convoys.
