input shaft question
« on: Mar 02, 2014, 10:01:06 PM »
So, I have a Marlin built R151F sitting in my garage. Been looking for a t-case so I can slap it in my 92 22RE 4runner for a while now with no luck. I found a smoking deal on a set of duals but they are both 21 spline with a TG adapter and 2.28:1 gears. I know Marlin suggests 21 spline in the front and 23 spline in the rear but at this point Im trying to save as much $$$ as I can because I am already getting flack from my bride. Can I just put a 23 spline input on the front case and slap it on the R151F without worrying too much? Or am I asking for trouble sooner than later with all that torque going through a 21 spline rear case? Is there anything else I am missing?

Thanks in advance for the help. Been wheeling a lloooonnnnggggg time but this will be my first dual case set up...FINALLY!  :gap:

yes the front crawl box will need to be converted to 23 spline and if your doing the crawl box u might as well put a 23 spline in the rear case so u dont have to worry about it..hell while you're in there might as well put some 4.7s in the rear case too! :eyebrow:

but to answer your question yes u can just convert the box to 23 spline and forget it but it would be smart to do the rear case to 23 too.

if it doesnt work out just sell me the r151f and take your bride out to a nice dinner with the $.lol

I know the feeling of wheeling on a stock case for a long time and then to a single 4.7 case  then i went dual cases and idk why i waited for so long. you will love them!

Cheers!

Thanks for the reply. Ive been toying with the idea of doing all of that cause I really do hate going back after the fact I'd easily be out another grand by the time that was all said and done. We will see. Ive also toyed with the idea of selling the R151 because the dual cases I picked up are attached to a good G52 tranny. Its super tempting to just bolt all that up and go but I let an R151 go before and I kinda regreted it so yeah...I dont knowl. We will see. Thanks again!!

One more question if anyone is still looking, are there any instructions for installing the new input shaft? Do I just follow the 4.7 instructions and stop at the input? Hope thats not as dumb of a question as it sounds. Ive been perusing my FSM but still confused... :dunno:

yea the FSM wont really explain installing a input shaft.

i wouldnt toss in a g52 if u have a r151f ready to go.

the real question you have to ask yourself is do you really want to spend the money on this swap? will you be using it?

u could also just slap in a 23 spline 4.7 case from marlin behind the r151f so u wont have to shorten or lengthen drivelines and still have the low gears u want with the r151f.
