FJ40 Flex
« on: Aug 09, 2002, 09:43:12 AM »
What springs are you guys using on spring over FJ's? I'd like to go coil but money is tight and its not a full on rock buggy. My stock springs are toast, I've been thinkin about the 44044's.

FJ60. This will also give you a longer wheelbase. That is what Butch and Chris from RotR are running. I think Mudrak may have some around his shop. I'm not sure if you use frount and rear, or just one end of the 60 at both ends of your 40. I'm just a mini guy what can I say.

Thought i did this already
SOA with stock springs is the way to go
Your not going to "full on" so I imagine a regular rock trail type rig ??? Cheap easy and fast. SOA stock springs.

Actually, there are a number of "easy" options for FJ40 SOA projects.  I chose to do mine with FJ55 rear spring packs at all 4 corners.  These are 3.5" longer than FJ40 springs and have a centered pin.  In the rear, your axle will move back 3.5" and you reverse the mounting for the shackle.  In front, you can keep the stock axle location with a shackle reversal....the front mount stays in the same relative location, the shackle eye gets recessed into the frame 3.5" further back of it's stock location.

My front springs have 9 leaves, my rears 8.  In front I use the entire travel of a 14" stroke Doestch Tech shock, so there is plenty of travel, even with that many leaves.

FJ60 rear springs will net you similar results, but hanger mods may be required since the spring eyes are even a bit larger than those for a 55.

I've got numerous writeups on my site on SOA projects for FJ40's...including mine.

I did my SOA with stock FJ40 springs. Works great! I'm still build the truck and I'm making a bunch of changes in this department. I have done 2 other SOA jobs just like mine and they work excellent. I think my new Ideas will blow them away

CruzrDave, those aren't too bad...but longer springs will net you greater flex.  These two pics are a couple years old, and have my truck running cute little 33's, but you get the idea...heck, it's even pre-camo paint!

Thanks Woody! That was my 3rd SOA I did. This 66' Cruiser belongs to a real good friend. He also going to be getn a TOY BOX real soon. I like the post-camo  cruiser pics better.

Hey Grease Monkey. You should check out Woody's (IH8mud) site or the Pirate4x4.

Also the White cruiser next to mine is #001 toybox and this year ramped a little better than mine with no weight in the back. I think  the Emu's might do better with payload but have not tried it yet. Also this year I lowered the bumpstops a little so my flex is a little less.
