T-case rebuild
« on: May 06, 2002, 05:08:10 PM »
Some friends of mine had a single case with a 4.7:1 gear set. They rolled the truck on Poison Spider last week-end and it burst into flame. It got hot enough to destroy the 38" Swampers and melt the dash. The t-case would probably have to be completely rebuilt to make it reliable, right? How much is a rebuild kit?

Did it get hot enough to melt the speedometer cable that attaches to the t/case? What about the wires on the 4WD shift light indicator, are they melted also?

If so, then I would remove a flange and inspect the seals. Possibly, checking for hardness wouldn't be sufficient since old seals harden with time. But instead, check for charcoalled appearance of burn or intense heat contact. Also, if you can, separate the t/case from the transmission. What does the gasket inbetween the two look like? If it is burned then expect the t/case gaskets to be burned as well. If it's not, then it may not have gotten hot enough down there.

If it did hot enough to burn gaskets and melt seals, then you might have a possibility of oil being 'baked' onto metal components. That's not good, especially in bearing races.

So, with the above in mind, we do sell a complete t/case overhall kit for $125 that includes all gaskets, seals, bearings--all Nachi (genuine toyota), and 2 new flange nuts. However, we have never ever sold one. The bearings just don't go bad, so we usually sell a gasket/seal only overhall kit. I think it would be priced around $30 bucks. Give us a call!  8)

I finally pulled the t-case and the gaskets between the adapter and the tranny are brittle. Same with the t-case to adapter gasket. :ack: The gear oil has a strong burnt smell. Some of the bolts had an ashy residue on the ends and some were clean  The interior looks good and everything moves well. The exterior is black but this wipes off easily with a little grease. I'm thinking that a gasket/seal kit will take care of it. Any suggestions? :-/

It is OK for oil to smell burnt (in a way), this is normal of oil that has seen some good usage.

If your gaskets were not ashed, then I would say everything is good. For sure paper would be the first thing to go in a fire..
